MUSIC MONDAY

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu is a Gumatj man from Arnhem Land, in the Northern Territory. Blind since birth, he has the voice of an angel, and writes and sings incredibly moving songs about his country. He was once a member of Yothu Yindi and now fronts his own band, the Saltwater Band.

On his record,"Gurrumul", he sings his stories accompanying himself on his guitar.

If you click here, you can hear Geoffrey, and here, you can listen to the Saltwater Band.

For a true blast from the past, listen to Yothu Yindi sing Treaty while watching a former Australian Prime Minister make himself look like a goose!

Listening to Geoffrey singing "I Was Born Blind" brought tears to my eyes, it was just beautiful. His band was good, but listening to him with his guitar was fantastic!

What a coincidence! I was working with a researcher at uni today who is at the NSW Con and researching indigenous music. She directed me to some sites. Then I see this post from you. He certainly does have a lovely voice.

A lovely voice indeed. Touching lyrics and a great question, yet he seems very much at peace with something unanswered and unchangeable. Wonderful lesson.

I love the title of your blog! And thanks for visiting Almost-one-a-Day Seattle.

Cabacurl -- thanks for visiting my blog! Thrilled you could come by. And I really enjoyed this posting you have up ... I listened to it while I had ten minutes in my hectic day at work, and I felt ... um - REAL ... again. Enjoy the BBC series ... I *missed* it when they played them here in North America. Hence, I succumbed and ended up buying two of the movies. I'll be back again to visit :)
