ABC WEDNESDAY

Z IS FOR..................
ZINC CREAM

Growing up near the coast in Sydney, back at the dawn of time, almost the only kind of sun protection available was zinc cream. It is able to absorb both UVA & UVB rays from sunlight, and is almost insoluble in water.

"Traditionally", it was worn smeared across your nose & cheeks, and on your lips, & came in white only. A high profile wearer of zinc cream is Aussie cricketer, Andrew Symonds, below.

As you can see from my zinc stick , it is available in these modern times in "skin tone " (though I'm not sure whose skin tone it matches), and also a rainbowed variety of fluro colours.

Wearing zinc on your nose is considered a very "Aussie" thing to do!

I'm sorry I didn't visit many ABC Wednesday blogs, last week, as I basically posted my Y item, immediately before going away for a week. I will try to catch up this week.

If you waltz over to Mrs Nesbitt's, you'll find other posts for Z. It should be fascinating this week!

Oh this is fabulous for Z. I was just diagnosed with a skin condition where I don't leave the house without super duper sun block on...
Love the kids with the colored cheeks!

This is great! We use zinc cream on babies' butts to control diaper rash! :D

Much better than the cocoanut oil we used to use to help us get a sun tan when all we were probably doing was setting ourselves up for melanomas later in life!

Love that last picture.

I like the colorful zinc cream. There are always pictures of lifeguards with it smeared across their nose.
Very original post.

I haven't thought of zinc cream in years--nice post!

Nice! Made me laugh. I wondered what the white stuff smeared on cricketers' faces was.

A new form of sun protection for me, but it ought to be effective, if no exactly decorous...

How did I not think of that! A great post for Z. I must admit though I have not been a great user of zinc creams, whatever their colour. I do use other sunburn protection, though. It is a must here in Australia.

Interesting! I think that would be a rather fun thing for kids to wear. I wonder if the product is in North America; I will have to check it out! Neat.

The children look happy with their faces painted. Interesting "Z" post

I can't remember when the change came. Zinc cream was around when I was a child but it wasn't all that fashionable then. Perhaps it was the slip, slop, slap campaign that made zinc cream so popular.
The last photo is fantastic, CabaC.

That looks like a fun product for kids. I haven't seen it here in the states before, although I haven't looked either. Cool :)

Though there are now dozens of products available for sun protection, I definitely remember some form of zinc cream on my brother's nose. He was a great surfer back in the '50s, and sunburn was his nemesis.

So many different Z's today.
Yours is great.

I'm really enjoying this week - so many clever ideas. Like Leslie said, we used zinc cream on nappy areas. This looks like a kid's delight!

Those bright colors on their noses make those cute kids look like little zawadi (presents, gifts).

This was the sun block of choice when I was a child and I was liberally smeared with it, especially at the beach. That was quite a few years ago, though, and I haven't noticed much of it in recent years. I isn't in the multi sunblock shelves of the drug stores around here.

Great shots and fun cultural awareness for us. :)

I remember when zinc became big here, but mostly with surfers ... I never thought I was cool enough to wear it! I had no idea it came in other colors; now I'm beyond worrying about being cool, and I would adore painting my face while protecting myself from the sun! Cause I fry like a chicken.
